ByFood: Otah Omelette... Toast

Last week, Dad brought "New Moon" brand Otah home and I was racking my brains on what to do with it. Then Sunny suggested that I try cooking Otah Omelette. I haven't eaten such a dish before and it sounded interesting so why not give it a try? At then, I had half a loaf of bread due to expire the next day so I decided to toast them and add to my omelette. It should taste OK.

  1. I started by cutting up the whole pack of Otah (180g) into small cubes, then mixed these into 3 beaten eggs + some water to add fluff. Otah already has salt in it, so I decided not to add anymore seasoning to my egg mixture.
  2. Next, I sliced 2 pieces of bread into quarters then toasted them for 5 minutes till crispy and brown. Altogether there were 8 small pieces of toasts, which means 8 small omelettes.
  3. Then I heated 3 tbsps of olive oil in a frying pan using medium low heat
  4. Using a small ladle, I slowly poured 1 scoop of otah egg mixture into the heated pan and laid out the pieces of otah evenly.
  5. Once the bottom of omelette was cooked, I put a piece of toast on top of the omelette  (preferably either left or right side) and pressed it down firmly.
  6. Using a spoon (or spatula), I gently folded the omelette into half (semi-circle). This takes a lot of patience and I was already perspiring by the time I did my 8th omelette.
  7. Finally I cooked both sides of the omelette till lightly brown and crisped, then serve it onto a plate. And so I repeated the same steps for my next 7 omelettes.

My Otah Toast Omelette!

Soft but firm, chewy and fragrant omelette!

It tasted really good! I've never eaten something like this and it has gone into my Top Foods List. This made me wonder whether the omelette would taste this good if I didn't add toast in.

All of the above happened last week. So today I've decided to cook Otah Omelette again but without the toast, to find out the answer for myself. The end-product wasn't satisfying at all and the whole omelette tasted mushy while the Otah didn't blend in that well. ;[ Well you can see from the picture below...

My Otah Omelette without Toast

Mushy and not so nice, tasted rather weird in fact!

It was definitely a bit of a disappointment but nonetheless I had a filling lunch. The stir-fried brinjal side dish was good and yumyum. ;] Have you had your lunch yet?

  2. Will your dad say that you're crazy to put toast in? I'll prefer the brinjal to be even softer. Just now too hungry so didn't cook it that soft. Maybe you should eat brinjal for lunch tomorrow!

  6. Hi Memory, thanks for visiting ;] Seems like you are an egg lover too! I guess almost anything can be added into eggs to make an omelette. Perhaps you can try adding vegetables like chopped tomatoes, brinjals, spinach or broccoli for healthier versions.
