No matter how many times I tried Taiwanese food, unless it was dessert, I could never rate them more than 7/10. Perhaps the problem lies with my taste buds and till now, I am still not able to put a finger to what went wrong.
Many friends raved about the food they ate in Taiwan and told me that I had to try the "authentic thing". So I flew to Taiwan, only to come home in disappointment. I have had better food before in my life elsewhere and it was only natural to compare. I prefer the braised minced pork with rice cooked by Mum's Filipino maid to those that I ate in Taiwan. The desserts sold in Taiwan are simply fantastic and almost good beyond words though. One thing for sure, Taiwan really has a vast and interesting variety of dishes on their country's food menu till it is not possible for anyone to try every single dish in his/her entire life.
I may sound really critical now because I just ate Taiwanese Mee Sua at "Lee's Taiwanese" in Star Vista. Seriously their menu looked SO GOOD till I could not resist trying out the restaurant. Even the food blogger "Miss Tam Chiak" wrote such a promising entry on them. So Panda and I ordered 2 Deluxe Set Meals at $15 each. One set comprised of a main dish, appetizer and drink. Mine was meatball & intestines mee sua + bak choy + iced wintermelon drink. His was also mee sua + cold beancurd slices + iced green tea. My expectations were set rather high due to the pictures and that the whole restaurant was pack with diners.
Our Taiwanese Mee Sua
I badly want to comment but, no comments...
While eating that, I started missing other food like Kuching's midin, Penang's laksa, Thailand's green curry, Japan's gyoza, Australia's fish N chips, and so on. It is not that Taiwanese food is bad, it is just my big problem.
